Who says that online discussion groups are never productive? Comments posted in the last two weeks at wwpinfo.com offered a variety of recommendations for action, some of which were positively civil.
On the proposal for the Princeton International Academy Charter School (PIACS): As usual the first comments posted online were negative. But other online visitors suggested alternate approaches: “Why doesn’t WW-P school district contract with an outside organization to offer an after-school Chinese program, like what is currently done in the Montgomery school district? This way WW-P doesn’t need to spend extra money and kids can learn Chinese at whatever young age their parents pick. Isn’t that a win-win situation?
“Does anyone know how to bring ideas to the school and the school board? If the school administrators and board members can be open-minded and embrace new ideas, I think we, as a community, can avoid a lot of drama in the towns.”
To which another added the following comment: “You can attend Chinese school at High School North, HXPCS. 90 Grovers Mill Road, Box 292. Plainsboro 08536. Here is the FAQ: www.hxpcs.org/registration/RegFAQ.aspx
On the subject of the proposed mosque: “Speaking for myself, I am fine with having a mosque in West Windsor. But living next to any house of worship (church, synagogue, temple, etc) is a different matter. I used to live in downtown Princeton near one of the churches. The noise, traffic, and parking can be major issues for residents.
“So I can understand the neighboring residents for being concerned. The same thing happened when St. David’s went in on New Village Road many years ago. This is probably why the town zoned a special area around Meadow Road for these types of facilities in order to lessen the impact on residential areas. Why the mosque isn’t being built there, who knows.”
On the recommendation for making Diwali part of the school holiday schedule: “India is another country we can’t even see from here. American schools have no duty to celebrate another country’s holiday.” Countered another: “Why does the school close for Rosh Hashanah?”
