Although some things have changed throughout Rose Bardachino’s career in the hair salon industry, many things have remained the same.
Bardachino is co–owner of Expressions Hair Studio in Hamilton Square, a salon she owns with Pat Hammer. Bardachino estimates that she and Hammer have been working together since about 1976, when both were stylists at a different salon.
In 1987, Bardachino and Hammer decided to open a salon together.
“We always wanted to. We both had that ambition in us, and once in a while you would talk about it jokingly,” Bardachino said. “You have to always wait for the right opportunity.”
Bardachino and Hammer began their business in a four–station salon, before moving to another space in the same shopping center. The current salon has 11 stations, where Bardachino and Hammer work alongside six other stylists.
Bardachino said the salon’s location on Route 33 makes it convenient for customers to reach.
Expressions Hair Studio offers services for hair and nails, as well as waxing. Some services include haircuts, color, perms, and styling for events such as weddings and proms.
“I just like to satisfy customers and make them feel good about themselves, and I like to keep up with the trends,” Bardachino said.
Bardachino said the salon’s stylists attend hair shows at least twice each year. At the shows, presenters demonstrate haircuts or coloring techniques, and stylists are able to purchase products.
Two new services offered at Expressions Hair Studio are keratin straightening treatments, and manicures with shellac polish, Bardachino said.
Some product lines that the salon features include Joico Vero hair color, Matrix hair color, Kenra, Phyto Organics, Redken and Redken for Men.
Bardachino said the salon caters to everyone in the family.
“We have a lot of men that come in here. Normally, they’re the husbands of the women that come in here,” Bardachino said. “It’s a family–oriented salon, where the husband, the wife and the kids come, sometimes all together.”
Bardachino said that some loyal customers have followed both she and Hammer since the earlier days of their careers.
“I’ve had customers for a long time, and I’d like to keep them happy and go ahead and always welcome new clients,” Bardachino said.
Expressions Hair Salon is located at 1905 Rt. 33 in Hamilton Square. The salon accepts payment by cash, check and credit card. Gift certificates are also available. Expressions is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but is closed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays. It is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
