John M. Vlasac and Boris Shmaruk worked together at the law office of Gill and Chamas in Woodbridge, and it was only a matter of time before they set off to become partners at their own firm.
“There comes a point in time where you just realize that you’re able to do this. You have gained enough knowledge and skill to do that, and you have to have a client base,” Vlasac said. “We got started, knowing that we had a skill, we had obtained the right amount of training and we took a chance.”
In 2005, the law firm of Vlasac and Shmaruk was established, with three locations in New Jersey and one in Bucks County. Vlasac said the firm focuses on giving personal attention to each client.
“You are getting an experienced team that you might not find at other small firms, and you’re getting that one-on-one 90 percent of the time. You’re not dealing with three different associates and then you only meet the partner, or the guy that’s actually going to try your case, at the time of trial,” Vlasac said. “The cases that I take, I meet you at inception, and I’m with you until the end.”
Today, the firm concentrates on catastrophic personal injury, from auto accidents to medical malpractice to workers’ compensation.
Vlasac and Shmaruk parted from their old firm on good terms, taking with them only clients that the two of them had generated.
“My partner and I were never short on clients,” Vlasac said. “We always had a good following because of the work product we put out, and I’d like to believe that that’s still what moves us today.”
Certified by the Supreme Court of N.J. as a Civil Trial Attorney, Vlasac is permitted to refer to himself as a “specialist” in the business. In addition to taking, and passing, an eight-hour test, his certification also relied on the approval and recommendations of other professionals in his line of work, including judges.
“You have to have respect from people you’ve gone against, and most likely have beaten, and are still willing to say, ‘Hey, this guy knows what he’s doing,’” the Hopewell resident said. “And judges you’ve been before will have to stand by and say, ‘Yes, I know the work product, and I know the skill.’”
Vlasac feels the firm’s low advertising budget is a tribute to the its reputation.
“They are just coming because of what they know and what they hear, and that’s the largest credit to the firm,” Vlasac said. “It’s a full-business injury firm that has quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the injury world.”
