Photo by Chris Sturgis. By Chris Sturgis In the high-pressure world of real estate, some agents seem to make a living by the hard sell. But Rich DeMartin says he has never found it necessary. DeMartin, of DeMartin Realty in Mercerville, said he works closely with his clients to help them see all the possibilities. When they find one they like, then he helps them buy or lease it. No pressure necessary. “Everyone is different,” he said. “We’ve had clients who bought the first house we showed them, and we’ve had clients who had to look at 30 or 40.” DeMartin said he really enjoys helping people complete the most important transaction of their lives. “To a young couple just starting out, that purchase is just as important as the purchase of a large luxury home is to a more established family,” he said. Most buyers know what they want, but a few seem to jump back and forth between different types of dwellings, such as townhouses and single-family homes. Often they have a conflict between what they want and what they can afford, he noted. “I don’t see myself as a salesperson. I’m just a service provider,” he said. DeMartin said his sales staff of 13 members enables his agency to give individualized attention to each client. DeMartin is a licensed broker in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania and a designee of the Graduate Realtor Institute, which requires advanced study in law, ethics and marketing. He also is an accredited real estate buyer’s representative, which means has taken courses with the National Association of Realtors. DeMartin opened his own real estate agency in 2001, after selling real estate part time since 1989. He said he knows Hamilton very well, having worked for 10 years in the township’s budget and purchasing department in the administration of former mayor Jack Rafferty. He received his bachelor’s degree in public administration from Trenton State College in 1984 and his master’s degree in business administration from Rider University in 2004. He said he pursued the M.B.A. to learn more about running a business, managing a staff and serving clients. DeMartin said there is no secret to selling property during a slow market. “We still do the same level of high-quality customer service and focus on their wants. That’s our main concern,” he said. When he lists a property, however, he takes care to view it from the perspective of a potential buyer. The first impression is key. It should appear to be neat and in good repair, he said. DeMartin belongs to the Trend Multiple Listing Service for Mercer, Burlington, Gloucester, Camden and Salem counties in New Jersey, as well as Bucks County, Pa. He also belongs to the Monmouth-Ocean Multiple Listing Service, the Middlesex County Multiple Listing Service, and the Garden State Multiple Listing Service for Hunterdon and Somerset counties. “If you list your home with me, you can rest assured it will receive the coverage it needs in this new and changing market,” he said.
