When Tracey Lee and Lori Cornish, troop leaders for Girl Scout Troop 214, wanted to support the troops in Iraq, they discovered Operation Iraqi Children. A school supply kit program, the organization provides school supplies to Iraqi children so that they can attend school. “We were very excited at the prospect of not only being able to support our soldiers overseas, but helping children in need,” says Lee. “Our troop was surprised to learn that in Iraq if a child does not have basic school supplies they cannot attend school, including basic learning tools that we often take for granted.”##M:[more]##
“Since our girls are in third grade, we decided to initiate an effort proportional to their age and solicit donations to put together the school kits,” says Cornish. “We distributed a flyer at Wicoff School, and received a very positive response from the faculty, administration, and the school families.” The troop was able to put together 22 kits with more than 220 supply items.
