The Robbinsville Police Department conducted a random drug search of Robbinsville High School on Friday.
In conjunction with the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, the police department brought in several K9 units—including one from Robbinsville—to search the school Friday morning. No arrests were made, according to a statement from police.
“The search was limited in scope because we wanted to keep the disruption of day-to-day school operations to a minimum,” Police Chief Chris Nitti said. “Although nothing of consequence was found during this particular search, the students are now on notice going forward that illicit narcotics activity will not be tolerated in our schools.”
The operation was approved by school administrators and the Robbinsville Township Board of Education as a deterrent to illegal activity in a school setting.
The K9 search included, but was not limited to, any items housed in school lockers. During the search, students and faculty were locked down in secure areas and classrooms.
Robbinsville High Principal Molly C. Avery sent an email to parents the morning of the search to inform them of the operation.
“The Robbinsville Police Department, the Robbinsville School District and the County Narcotics Task Force are committed to a safe, drug-free environment, especially in our schools,’’ Nitti said. “There has been an uptick in narcotics activity in the school district, which is why each of the groups involved with this pre-scheduled, coordinated effort felt it was necessary to conduct this operation at this time.”
