Lawrence Township Public Schools recognized for climate change education

All seven schools in Lawrence Township Public School District have been awarded bronze certification with Sustainable Jersey for Schools.

The program provides guidance, support and recognition to schools that implement steps to be sustainable in their operations and proactive in preparing students for the challenges they will face in the future.

A certification from Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a prestigious designation to help schools and districts pursue a balanced sustainability program one policy, program, or resource audit at a time. LTPS district administration, faculty, community liaisons, staff and students all held an integral role in this process.

“Our district has shown remarkable integration of sustainable initiatives, environmental awareness, and climate change curriculum connections throughout instruction that support our students academically and social-emotionally,” said Cari Gallagher, LTPS district sustainable leader.

“We are proud to once again achieve bronze certification from Sustainable Jersey for Schools and to share our accomplishments with the Lawrence community,” Gallagher said.

All seven schools had to provide documentation for action items that support curriculum, instruction, and teaching at all levels in the district. All four elementary schools and the intermediate school host Climate Change Corners for their students to expand upon the Interdisciplinary Climate Change standards.

Lawrence Middle School continues to strive with the implementation of therapy dogs that support mental health. High School students take a leadership role in their Green Action Team to provide sustainability support for their school community.

“I am incredibly proud of our Lawrence educators and students for obtaining this important certification, and our district’s overall commitment to climate change education,” said new superintendent, Robyn Klim. “Together, we are making a positive impact on our community and our planet.

This is the third time that schools in the LTPS district received the bronze certification from Sustainable Jersey for Schools. More information can be found at sustainablejerseyschools.com.
