The 1990 invention marked the earlier contribution to the field of biomaterial development with collagen, a group of fibrous proteins that occur in vertebrates as the chief constituent of connective tissue fibrils and in bones. The aim was to provide a biodegradable matrix that could be used for wounds, implants, and various surgical and medical procedures. Clinical applications include artificial skin, nerve regeneration tubes, artificial blood vessels, bone substitutes, hemostatic dressings, and organ replacements.
