Members of Cub Scout Pack 48 in West Windsor recently participated in two conservation activities as part of their ongoing mission to preserve the local environment. Past activities include trail marking and cleaning the blue bird boxes in Mercer County Park.##M:[more]##
Pack members and their families attended a tree-planting ceremony on September 9 at the Ron Rogers Arboretum in West Windsor. The pack planted six saplings and attended a presentation about tree-planting basics by Heather McNeil-Nazareth, resource specialist for the Mercer County Soil Conservation District in Hamilton Square. The scouts learned digging, watering, and mulching techniques for new plantings.
The Pack’s Webelos II den also gathered last month to finish construction of three bat boxes on behalf of the Mercer County Soil Conservation District. The boxes are designed to house bat colonies, which eat mosquitoes and provide an environmentally friendly method of insect control in the Garden State. Bat boxes also prevent bats from nesting in homeowners’ attics. The scouts completed the final assembly and painting in late August. Troop 88 in Princeton donated materials and additional labor toward the project.
Pack 48 meets one Friday evening per month at Village School in West Windsor. For the complete schedule and more information about joining, contact Cubmasters Greg DiRusso at 609-716-4948 or E-mail gdirusso@comcast.net, or Rob Schweitzer at 609-490-1127 or E-mail rns60@aol.com.
