The WW-P varsity ice hockey and swim teams have already started their seasons. Now the wrestling, fencing, and basketball teams are preparing for opening weekend on Friday, December 16.
Knights basketball opens on December 16 against Lawrence with the girls playing at home at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at Lawrence High at 7 p.m.
The Pirates basketball teams open on December 16 against Hightstown with the girls playing a 5:30 p.m. away game and the boys starting at 7 p.m. at home.
Also opening its season on December 16 is the North wrestling team at home against Belleville at 4:30 p.m.
South wrestling opens on Saturday, December 17, with a tri-match at Manville at 10 a.m. against Manville and New Brunswick.
The South fencing team’s opening match against St. Augustine scheduled for December 16 has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
The team will now open at a quad event the following day at Montclair at 1 p.m. The boys will face off against Columbia, St. Peter’s, and Montclair, while the girls will compete against Columbia, Wayne Valley, and Montclair
The Knights fencing team will open on December 17 in a quad competition at Somerville High School starting at 9 a.m.
Meanwhile, this season has already featured one early crosstown rivalry contest, as the North and South swimming teams faced off on December 13.
The North boys swimmers defeated High School South, 106-64, for the first time in the 12-year history of the program.
North’s Greg Cino was a key contributor in the win, winning the 200- and 500-meter freestyle and participating in the first-place 400 free relay.
The South girls defeated North 105-65, bolstered by strong performances by Sydney Bornstein in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, and Jocelyn Yuen in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke.
In ice hockey, High School North is off to a good start with a 3-1-1 record. South is hoping to rebound from a 1-3 start.
