Katie Amigo, 11, was a first time volunteer at the NJ Special Olympics held June 4 and 5. On Saturday she assisted with aquatics and on Sunday, softball.
Born in New York City, she has lived in West Windsor for six years with her parents Luis and Parisa. They have been involved in Special Olympics for several years as a family. Luis, a banker in New York City, also does volunteer work for Smile Train. Parisa, a physician at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, also volunteers with the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
A sixth grade student at Community Middle School, Katie studies piano at Westminster Conservatory and ballet at Princeton Ballet School. Volunteers under 18 need parental support and her parents volunteered as well.
“Last year Katie was very moved at the opening parade and we encouraged her to become involved,” says her father. “It is very touching and it is just fantastic to see the kids be so proud of themselves.”
West Windsor Troop 40 Boy Scout was also at the event. Troop members Brian Reil, David Foppes, and Adam Schuit assisted New Jersey State Troopers and assisted at the softball toss ceremony. Adam Schuit also umpired the softball game between the Somerset Tigers and the Bergen County Wildcats. They worked with Joan Nester of West Windsor, the scout volunteer coordinator. Her son, Robert, won several gold medals at the competition.
