Each spring, Princeton Friends School students, parents, teachers and alumni volunteer at a school in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The PFS Guatemala Group is set to make its 10th trip to volunteer at La Escuela Miguel Vasquez in March.
The project, led by Spanish teacher Silvia Estrada, is intended to enrich the service and foreign language components of the PFS curriculum while providing aid to an underserved population of students.
Once in Guatemala, the PFS team volunteers at the Vasquez school by sharing musical and artistic activities, teaching games and lessons and carrying out maintenance projects on the school itself.
Every PFS traveler arrives in Guatemala with two suitcases; one for their clothing and personal items, the other filled with school supplies donated by the PFS community.
PFS eighth grade students who are interested in participating in the service trip are given the opportunity, regardless of their ability to cover the cost of travel.
The trip is also open to seventh graders, teachers, parents and alumni, a number of whom make the journey more than once.
In addition to volunteering at the Vasquez school, participants have an opportunity to travel the Guatemalan countryside and visit historic sites.
