Volunteer Please

New Jersey Clean Communities seeks volunteers for its second annual clean water challenge. It raises environmental awareness through community-based events throughout the state to clean up our waterways. Clean-ups will take place between March 1 and April 30. Groups and individuals may register at njclean.­org. Volunteers will be honored on Friday, May 23, at Lambertville Station in Lambertville.

American Red Cross seeks volunteers to assist victims of disasters such as house fires and floods, greet blood donors at blood drives, communicate information to members of the Armed Forces and their families, and help individuals and communities learn how to be better prepared for disasters.

For Teens

At the Well is accepting applications for its Young Women’s Leadership Academy. It will be held at Princeton University, Sunday, July 27, to Friday, August 8. The program is geared toward minority girls entering tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grades. Leadership skills, academic achievement, motivation, improved essay writing, and more focused on. Rochester Institute of Technology invites high school students with deafness or hearing problems to compete in the Spirit Writing Contest. Students may compete in writing, digital arts, film, and animation contests. The deadline to enter any competition is Monday, March 17.

The second national competition is the annual Digital Arts, Film and Animation Competition for high school students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Students in grades 9 to 12 can compete for a $250 cash prize in categories including film, graphic media, interactive media, photo imaging, 3-D animation, and webpage design. Nominations Invited

Home Instead Senior Care invites nominations to honor a senior’s volunteer efforts. Nominees must complete at least 15 hours of volunteer service per month. The national winner receives a $5,000 donation to a non-profit charity of his or her choice and $500 donations for the state winners. Deadline is Saturday, March 1. Call for Art

Mercer Community College Gallery seeks entries for “Mercer County Artists 2014” open to artists aged 18 or older who live, work, or attend school in Mercer County. Artists may enter up to two original works completed since March, 2012, in any media except photography. Works need to be dropped off Saturday, March 1, between 9:30 a.m. and noon at the West Windsor campus. Works that are not accepted for the show should be picked up between 3:30 to 5 p.m.

More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded, including purchase awards from the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Artwork selected for purchase awards will become part of the county’s permanent collection. Visit www.­mccc.­edu/gallery.

For the Young

Attitudes In Reverse seeks entries for its fifth Annual T-Shirt Design Concept contest with a focus on creative ideas for communicating the importance of seeking help for mental health disorders. AIR, a Plainsboro based nonprofit organization, is dedicated to educating middle school, high school, and college students about mental health, related disorders, and suicide prevention.

For Families

Howell Farm is accepting applications for parent/child enrollment in its spring hatchery program designed to introduce children to life on the farm, while parents volunteer time helping the farm staff work with spring visitation groups and various other chores. The 12-week program runs on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., beginning March 19 to 21. One parent must join the farm’s staff in exchange for one child’s participation in the program. No experience is necessary. Parents with two children must have another adult to cover for the second child.

Children aged 3 to 5 years may participate in the program, which includes activities such as feeding and watering animals, collecting eggs, storytelling, crafts, and a hayride. Parents may enroll by attending an organizational meeting on Tuesday, February 25, at 1 p.m. Meetings are intended for parents only and last about 1 hour. Reservations are not required.

Goodwill Home Medical Equipment accepts no longer needed home medical equipment such as wheelchairs, canes, shower benches, hospital beds, and more. Items may be dropped off at the GHME store at 18 Arctic Parkway, Ewing, or at any Goodwill Store in the South Jersey and Philadelphia region.
