Plainsboro firefighters have not only been collecting food and clothing for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, they also have dispatched men and equipment to the scene. Lieutenant Tom Healey reported on November 7 that “we sent an engine and four firefighters to Sea Bright for a 24-hour deployment beginning Tuesday morning at 7 a.m.
The images they saw, including a pickup truck under a house demolished by the storm, a sailboat on the shores of the Shrewsbury River, and damaged stores along Ocean Avenue, gave a sense of urgency to the relief drive they are conducting back in central New Jersey. As part of that drive the Grovers Mill Coffee Company will hold a benefit concert beginning on Sunday, November 11, at 11 a.m. at its location in McCaffrey’s Shopping Center on Princeton-Hightstown Road. People will be asked to donate a can of non-perishable food.
Healey reports that the firehouse food and clothing drive is continuing. “We’ve had a tremendous outpouring. We’ve delivered food and clothing to Bay Head, Tuckerton, and Sea Bright. We have also contributed items in-demand to the Plainsboro Food Pantry. At this time, due to the fact that agencies and shore area distribution centers are overwhelmed with used clothes, we are accepting only new clothes — especially socks, t-shirts, and children’s clothing.”
