The West Windsor Bicycle-Pedestrian Alliance and Friends of West Windsor Open Space are hosting a trailbuilding day on Saturday, March 31, beginning at 10 a.m. “Come join us as we continue to build a trail network through beautiful wooded preserved land along the Millstone River,” says Ken Carlson, president of WWBPA. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s a great thing to do for the community!”##M:[more]##
The trails, located on preserved land bordered by Joanne Street, the Millstone River, Bear Brook, and the northeast corridor rail line, now offer views of the Millstone River and a variety of trees as they pass through twisted vines and trees. To access the trails, park at the Millstone Preserve parking lot on Millstone Road, and walk the short distance down Millstone Road to Joanne Street, and then down to the end of Joanne Street.
More than 16 volunteers helped blaze new trails along the Millstone River on March 24. They worked for several hours raking, chain sawing, and cutting back branches and brambles, to create the new trails. Kevin Appelget set out the network and volunteers included Dave, Katherine, Matthew and Andrew Osborn, Tim Cresson, Robin Miller, Roger Alig, Ace Miller, Frank Potter, Laxma and Sula Kolla, Newell Benedict, Ham Pkardooni, Ted Ross, Ron Slinn, and Ken Carlson.
The group meets monthly on the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m., in room A, of the West Windsor Municipal Building. Membership supports the group’s efforts to make the community a safe and accessible place to walk and bike. Annual dues are $25 for adutls and $15 for students.
Board of trustees include Ken Carlson, president; Chris Scherer, first vice president; Susan Conlon, second vice president; Meg Chicco, secretary; and Sandy Shapiro, treasurer. Advisory board members include Bruce Ellsworth, Janet Greenman, Daryl McMillan, and Alison Miller.
WWPBA has organized a series of walks within the town to raise awareness on safe access and routes and to get feedback from people about desired and needed improvements that could provide better and safer bike and pedestrian access in neighborhoods and connecting to neighboring communities. The next walk is Tuesday evening, April 17, on Canal Pointe Boulevard.
Bring working gloves, a hat, and water to drink. The committee also requests that you bring one or more of the following: rakes, shears or loppers, and a hoe. Register with Carlson at 609-933-4918 or E-mail wwbikeped@gmail.com. The group’s website is www.princetononline.org/wwbpa.
“Children are welcome,” says Carlson. “It’s a wonderful experience for kids and they always really enjoy trailbuilding.”
