WW-P Girl Scout leaders were recognized for their commitment to Girl Scouts and dedication to their troops at an event at High School North in April. Awards were presented for years of membership and service, Rookie of the Year, and Volunteer of Excellence.
The Rookie of the Year Award honors troop leaders who have gone above and beyond to guide their troops in their first two years as a leader. Award winners include Jaz Deol, Troop 70692; Kristina Giasi, Troop 70036; Mini Krishnan, Troop 70051; Maura Nester, Troop 70036; Roena Romero, Troop 71584; and Corinna Storina, Troop 70052.
Volunteer of Excellence Awards recipients are:
Lorraine Camaratta, the co-leader and treasurer of Troop 70600, is also the service unit’s registrar, taking care of close to 1,600 registrations each year. “She brings wisdom and an easy going approach,” says Kate Henkel, the troop leader. “She has been such a great asset.”
Theresa Gillars, co-leader of Troop 71016 and WW-P service unit’s event manager for cabin camping. “She begins each task with a warm smile and easygoing personality that makes her very approachable,” says Jan Cardinale, the troop leader. “If there are any cancellations she takes it all in stride and rearranges her schedule to accommodate any schedule disruptions.”
Jackie Houck, leader of Troops 70627 and 71033. “Jackie is one of the rare women who can be a strong and capable Girl Scout Leader but, at the same time, Jackie is there for the girls as a mentor, role model, and advisor,” says Gina Armstrong, a troop mom. “Her Girl Scouts come to learn and understand that they need to initiate certain things and be responsible.”
Tephanie Meiers and Laurie Renz, Troop 70871, have been troop leaders together for more than 10 years. They have “nurtured these girls from innocent children to moody middle-schoolers to self-confident independent young adults,” says Rita Jain, a troop mom.
Dorothy Safranek, Troop 70214. “In every meeting she has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the girls,” says Chenthamarai Natarajan, a troop mom. “The opinion of each and everyone is heard and put into action.”
