Jacquie Klotz may be a freshman, but her stats — most notably the number of points she has scored for the North girls’ basketball team over the past few games –– say otherwise: 14, 15, 18, 18, 19, and a whopping 27.
With her help, the Knights have a solid winning record of 8-4 and are gaining momentum as the Mercer County Tournament draws nearer.
Her most dramatic effort came on January 15 against Allentown, when she hit a basket three seconds before the buzzer to tie the game. In overtime, she scored the only basket to lift North over Allentown, 56-54.
Klotz has also proven to be a contributor defensively, grabbing almost as many rebounds as baskets, as in the team’s win over Lawrenceville, where she grabbed 12 rebounds.
Along with Klotz, senior captain Lexie Forsell has been a consistent scorer, with 8 points in games against Notre Dame, Hopewell, and Lawrenceville.
North has earned bragging rights on the ice as well. The 13-2 North ice hockey team is on a 12-game winning streak.
By the end of the game against Princeton earlier this month, the team had tallied an impressive nine goal attack for the win, led by Dylan Strober, who recorded four goals.
Crosstown rival High School South also fell to North, 5-3, on January 13.
Other offensive weapons for North this season include Harrison and Andrew Washuta, Ben Bugge, Marc and Stephen Kolber, and Casey Litwack.
The South girls’ swimming team is on its way to yet another successful season, having already claimed the title at the Pirate Invitational, blowing all other teams out of the water with a 333-point performance.
South won 10 of 11 events, leaving no chance for the second-place team, Pennsbury, to come close. Rebecca Lewinson, Jocelyn Yuen, and Mereditch Ketchmark each won two individual events at the event. Lewinson — the Pirate Invitational’s four-time outstanding swimmer — set a meet record in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:06.98. The 200-yard medley relay team of Cori Michibata, Lewinson, Yuen, and Ketchmark, and the 200-yard free relay team of Lewinson, Amanda Grant, Yuen, and Ketchmark, each set meet records, with times of 1:49.09 and 1:41.36, respectively.
The girls are on a similar path as last year, when they took home their first NJSIAA Public Group A state title after first winning the Mercer County Tournament and repeating as eight-time CVC champions. The team is looking to its next big event, the Mercer County Tournament, which begins on Thursday, February 4.
