Luncheonette. Love the word and all the connotations that come with it. Plain. Formica. Stainless steel. No pretense. Utilitarian. Good food.
Walk into the Sunrise on South Warren an that is what you will find. Sit at the counter or at one of the tables and order up some simple, satisfying breakfast or lunch goodies. The menu is not a extensive as a full-blown diner, but you will be able to find something to suit your mood.
On a recent breakfast visit, Co-Muncher and I were greeted warmly on arrival. We sat ourselves at table against the wall and menus were delivered quickly. We ordered coffee, which arrived in sturdy ceramic cups while we perused the menu.
Most of the time I go for that classic Trenton treat: a pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich on a kaiser roll. Not this morning. I was hungry. Still, we had enough trouble narrowing down our choices that asked the server to give us a couple of extra minutes.
Finally I decided on the mushroom and sausage omelet ($5.75 plus 50 cents for cheese). Co-Muncher ordered the spinach omelet ($4.75). Omelet platters come with toast and a choice of home fries or grits. Co-Muncher opted out of the standard wheat toast and got a corn muffin instead ($2.65). The coffee is also included, and refills were free.
Within minutes, our platters appeared. Co-Muncher’s home fries had been overlooked. No problem. They were delivered on a side plate promptly.
My mushroom and sausage omelet was chock full of freshly sauteed (not canned) mushrooms. While my taste buds might have wanted a little more sausage in the mix, my doctor is probably happy. The sausage flavor was there. The eggs were fluffy and tender.
The home fries were a nice portion. Tender on the inside with a golden crust on the outside. Just like Mom would have made if she had a flattop in the kitchen.
Ample pieces of bright, green spinach were folded into Co-Muncher’s omelet. It was as attractive to look at as it was healthy. The corn muffin was split and toasted perfectly.
Breakfast is available until 11 a.m. The lunch side of the menu covers everything from salads to hot or cold sandwiches; hot dogs, hamburgers, club sandwiches and hot platters. It’s comfort food prepared fast, done well and reasonably priced. Places like this are disappearing from our cities and towns in favor of fast-food franchises or more contemporary cafes.
