Literacy Volunteers in Mecer County is set to celebrate Adult Literacy Awareness Month with several events throughout September.
According to LVMC executive director, Cheryl Kirton, 60,000 adults in Mercer County read at fifth grade level or below.
The organization has more than 250 adult literacy volunteers who provide one-to-one literacy tutoring to Mercer County adults. They also offer conversation group classes and computer training to more than 400 Mercer County adults.
LVMC created Adult Literacy Awareness Month as a way of bringing attention to the issue, thank volunteer tutors across the county and highlighting the importance of the libraries in the county that support the tutoring efforts.
“Some organizations set a day or a week in September as Adult Literacy Day or Week,” Cindy Gordon, LVMC board president said in a statement, “we wanted to create a series of month-long events to highlight the issue and the need for more people to volunteer to be a tutor, as well as to raise funds.”
Several businesses have committed to donating a percentage of sales to the cause.
Cold Stone Creamery and Cheeburger, Cheeburger in Mercer Mall on Route 1 in Lawrenceville are set to donate sales from Sept. 11.
Ruby Tuesday, located at 3817 Route 1 in Princeton, is set to donate sales from Sept. 15.
Cheeburger, Cheeburger located at 182 Nassau St., Princeton plans to donate sales from Sept. 18.
A book fair fundraiser supporting LVMC is scheduled for Sept 21 at Barnes and Noble in Princeton Market Fair, Route 1, Princeton.
The final fundraiser is set for Cheeburger, Cheeburger in Shoppes at Hamilton, 549 Route 130, Hamilton, on Sept. 26.
