Lawrence Elementary Educator Jeanne Muzi has been selected to assist scientists on a NOAA research cruise on August 2, 2015.
Jeanne Muzi, an elementary educator at Lawrence Township Public Schools in Lawrenceville sets sail August 2, 2015 on a research mission to assist NOAA scientists on a hydrographic survey in the Northeast Atlantic. Muzi teaches cross-curricular creative problem solving to K-3rd graders and was named 2009-2010 New Jersey Teacher of the Year. She will be working with NOAA to survey the ocean floor.
Muzi was chosen to participate in the 12 day cruise as a part of the 2015 class for the NOAA Teacher at Sea Program, a program that bridges science and research through real-world research experiences for teachers.
Muzi will sail aboard NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson, whose primary mission is to collect and process the data needed to maintain and update the nautical charts along the U.S. East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Accurate charts are critical for the safe shipping of goods and services to and from our shores. Muzi will depart on Thomas Jefferson out of New Bedford, MA and will blog about her experience on the NOAA Teacher at Sea Blog.
The NOAA Teacher at Sea Program, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, has provided nearly 700 teachers the opportunity to gain first-hand experience participating in science at sea. Educators chosen to participate in the Teacher at Sea Program are able to enrich their curricula with the depth of understanding they gain working at sea, and working side-by-side with NOAA scientists on cutting-edge research.
