Recording artist Luke Elliot was born and raised in New Jersey, and the Lawrence native will return to his roots this month, performing at the Hopewell Theater Friday, March 23.
From an early age, Elliot found a love for creating music. He started taking piano lessons at eight years old and started writing songs at 13. A Lawrence High School graduate, Elliot went on to study English and literature at Mercer County Community College but left to pursue a career in music. Elliot is a former employee of Community News Service. He released is first EP, Death of a Widow, in 2010.
After years on the club circuit in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York City, Elliot was discovered in 2014 by Christa Shaub, who managed Rihanna in the past. Soon after, his music career blossomed overseas, touring Norway, where he also found a backing band and recorded his debut full-length album, Dressed for the Occasion.
The album, released in 2016, was produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) and was met with positive reviews from publications like No Depression, Rock & Folk (France), Le Parisien (France) and Dagbladet (Norway). Elliot has been compared to Leonard Cohen, and Norwegian writer Fredrik Wandrup described him as “less rock than Sinatra, more crooner than Springsteen. But related to both.”
Elliot has toured with Sivert Høyem in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Norway and followed up with a full headline tour in Europe in January 2017. He started this year with a shows at the Light of Day festival in Asbury Park, New York and Turkey and will perform is Australia later this spring.
