Lawrence High School senior Devlin “Rock” Maloney earned a gold medal at the 2025 Special Olympics New Jersey Powerlifting Regional Competition on April 12.
Maloney captured the top honor in the bench press and finished fourth in both the squat and deadlift categories, demonstrating strength, focus and determination. The event was hosted by Special Olympics New Jersey.
This year marks Maloney’s third year competing in powerlifting, a journey that began during his freshman year with encouragement from Lawrence High School staff member Mr. Deak.
In his sophomore year, Maloney’s talent was recognized by Mr. Reardon, who invited him to join the Special Olympics team and became his first official coach. He is now also coached by LHS senior Nicholas Shenouda, whose friendship, support, and motivation have contributed to Maloney’s continued success.
Following his recent achievements, Maloney was invited to the Superintendent’s Suite, where he was interviewed by LTPS Communications Manager Jen Baldassari and Board of Education President Michele Bowes. Proudly displaying his medals, Maloney spoke about his training, competition experience, and aspirations for the future.
Next, Maloney will compete in all three powerlifting events at the Special Olympics New Jersey Statewide Championship at The College of New Jersey on June 7.
