Lawrence Middle School art teacher Jennifer Skorupa received a grant from the Lawrence Township Education Foundation to bring an artist-in-residence program to school during the LMS Spring Arts Festival that was held in May.
Trenton graffiti artist Leon Rainbow worked with students and explained the differences between controlled and illegal urban art, then guided them in creating a mural that will be mounted at LMS as a gift from the 8th grade class. This grant focused on expanding student’s understanding of art and community.
“We are demystifying street art,” Rainbow said as kids swirled brightly colored acrylic paint onto oversize boards.
Students used their creativity to design and collaborate on the project that reads “LMS: Reach for the Stars.”
“We learned that not all graffiti is bad,” said 8th grader Alexa Sullivan. “It was really fun to do.”
