The Greater Eldridge Park Neighborhood Association will honor nurse and environmentalist Carol Nicholas with its third annual GEPNA’s Woman of Excellence Award this year. The ceremony will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Nature Center’s Rinck House, 481 Drexel Ave.
Nicholas, a former Lawrence Nature Center president, is currently the project director of the Greater Mercer Public Health Partnership. Nicholas was a post-partum nurse at the Albany Medical Center from 1973 to 1990 and worked in the emergency room and ophthalmology clinic at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. She also worked in Prevention of Blindness at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
From 2005 to 2012, Nicholas was the school nurse at Princeton Day School. Since Fall of 2012, she has worked as school nurse at the Hunt School of Princeton and at the Lawrence and Princeton Public Health Department’s child health clinic, flu clinic and school immunization audit department.
Nicholas has been the project director of the Greater Mercer Public Partnership since June 2015. She has been a member of the Garden Gate Garden Club since 1995 and has served as president, vice president and treasurer. Nicholas joined the Lawrence Community Concert Band in 1992 and has been the group’s treasurer since 1996. From 2000 to 2007, Nicholas was director of Lawrence Girl Scouting, overseeing programming and safety for 40 leaders, 36 troops for 350 girl scouts. She was a liaison with township officials and service organizations, and was the liaison with council office to support nationwide goals.
Nicholas is one of the founders of the Lawrence Nature Center and worked with the township recreation department to coordinate a community Nature Festival to celebrate the opening of the new nature center. Nicholas was president of the center from 2004 to 2011. Nicholas has been a Mercer/Lawrence Township Medical Emergency Volunteer since 2006 and in 2003 underwent smallpox bioterrorism training. She also helped start a free clinic at Home Front that examines children and adults once a week.
