The Pennington School appointed William S. Hawkey as head of school following the departure of the current head, Stephanie Townsend, at the end of the upcoming 2013–14 academic year.
Townsend has been named head of the Ransom Everglades School, a college preparatory school near Miami, Fla., beginning on July 1, 2014.
Hawkey, 54, joined The Pennington School in 1982. For the past four years he has served as associate head of school and dean of faculty. Past positions include teacher, head of Upper School and as head coach of the girls’ soccer team.
Recently, Hawkey has served as a key member of the Strategic Planning and Vision Committee.
A native of Pennington, Hawkey is a graduate of the University of Vermont, with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and human development. He went on to study at Temple University, earning master’s degrees in counseling psychology and school psychology before completing his Ph.D. degree in the latter field there.
Hawkey lives in Pennington with his wife, Karen, and their three children. Their two sons are both Pennington graduates and are now in college, and their daughter entered middle school at Pennington in September.
Just a few months into a new capital campaign to raise $10 million for a new Humanities building, the school has already achieved more than half of their goal. Previous successful campaigns allowed the creation of new playing fields, including an artificial turf field with lights and new bleachers, and a complete renovation of the second floor of Stainton Hall, soon to become a building dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and math.
