Bryce Meccage, a 2024 graduate of The Pennington School, has been selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the second round as the 57th overall pick in the MLB Draft.
A four-year career at Pennington saw Meccage break the school’s record for strikeouts with 158, while posting a remarkable 1.06 ERA over 79.2 innings pitched.
Meccage is the first Pennington player to be drafted directly out of high school. The last Pennington player to be drafted in the MLB was Vinny DeFazio in 2009 by the Texas Rangers; DeFazio was a 2004 graduate of The Pennington School.
Meccage was the 51st-ranked prospect by MLB.com for the MLB draft. Coach Steve Kowalski notes: “His fastball can reach 97 mph, and he compliments that with a hard slider around 87-88 mph and a nasty curveball around 79-80 mph. He was ranked in the Top 10 for high school pitchers in this year’s draft by MLB Pipeline. Bryce threw 22 innings without giving up a single hit this past spring. A full-season no-hitter is something unheard of in the game of baseball.”
In 2023, Meccage led the Pennington baseball team to its second NJISAA Prep B State Championship in the last eight years with a stellar performance on the mound in the final, going 7 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits, and striking out 15 batters.
When asked about his experience in the draft and what is yet to come, Meccage said: “This feels like a new journey is about to begin, and a fresh start to continue to dominate on the mound.”
Meccage had previously committed to the University of Virginia.
