In every edition of the Ewing Observer, Mayor Bert Steinmann answers readers’ questions. This month, The questions were posed by the staff of the Ewing Observer.

I read in the Observer in June 2012 that tax reassessment would be done on all homes in Ewing during 2012., butthere was no tax reassessment done. Is a reassessment going to take place?

The last property tax assessment in Ewing Township was completed in 1993. We are currently updating all of our maps that would be required for the reassessment. Based on the completion of the information later this year and two other towns in the county staring their process, I have asked that our reassessment process start next year. This would place the revaluation process for Ewing to occur in 2015.

A local newspaper gets dropped off on my property every week. I have contacted the newspaper to ask them to stop littering in my yard and neighborhood with no success. Is there an ordinance against what they are doing and can they be fined for littering the neighborhood with their unwanted trash?

We passed an ordinance in August of 2012 indicating that the residents of Ewing can opt out of receiving the many advertisements that are often delivered in the driveway or thrown on the lawn. We also notified the Times of Trenton and Trentonian of the new ordinance. I met with representatives of the Times in my office to address this issue and the unsightly look it leaves all over Ewing.

You can contact the Times and formally request to be removed from the list for delivery. If they do not stop after your request they can be penalized up to $ 500 an occurrence and up to 90 days in prison. This applies to any person, firm or corporation as noted in letter G on page 3 of the ordinance. If there are violations after the notice please contact Code Enforcement at 609-883-2900 Extension 7677

What are some of the efforts and measures that our town is currently taking, has taken, and plans to take to make Ewing a more environmentally friendly and sustainable place?

We have a Green Team Advisory team and a Environmental Advisory Committee that is working very hard to help Ewing Township with its sustainable efforts. They have worked very closely with the folks from Sustainable Jersey and with surrounding towns to help Ewing in its efforts to be more sustainable.

The town has placed a new white roof on the municipal building, which will help with energy cost. We have also replaced all of our outside lights with new LED lights. They are more energy efficient, longer lasting and also light up our parking lots much brighter than any time in the past. The new lights replaced ones that that were 22 years old.

We are also in the process of replacing our 22 year old boilers with new energy efficient units which along with a new balanced air system will be more energy efficiency to town hall. We have also worked closely with Mercer County in the rehabilitation of the Ewing Senior Community Center. The inside will have a new generator and the outside has new LED lighting. The newly paved parking lot also has pores blacktop in the parking spaces which will allow for rain to drain better and recharge the ground water.

If you would like to participate in our efforts please contact my office and I will have the green team representative and/or the environmental representative. I can be reached at 609-883-2900 , Extension 7643. I can also be reached by email at bsteinmann@ewingnj.org.

When will Code Enforcement take notice of the property formerly know as Trenton Stone Co. on Wilburtha Road? Just drive by and see the unsafe derelict building, tires, and garbage, which have been there since Mr. Loveday died six years ago.

We have reached out to the property owner. They have had two contracts to sell that fell through. We have informed her that she has to clean the property and place a fence around the property within 30 days. If the family fails to clean and secure the property the Township of Ewing will do the same and assess the cost against the property as a lien that would be repaid on the sale of the property or the sale of the lien.

If you have a question for the mayor for next month’s edition, submit it by emailing dhyatt@mercerspace.com or by going online to mercer space.com and searching for “Ask the Mayor.” You must be a Ewing resident.
