Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 was the two-year anniversary of the UNC Chapel Hill shooting. To commemorate the lives of the three victims—Deah Barakat, Yusor Aub-Salha and Razan Abu-Salha—Young Muslims NeighborNets across the country participated in a month of service where YM members volunteered at soup kitchens, made food to give to shelters or soup kitchens to distribute, held canned food drives or donated to a local food pantry.
On Sunday, Feb. 26, the Trenton chapter of Young Muslims, including members of the Islamic Circle of Mercer County in Lawrence, organized a community event in which volunteers made food and hygiene bags to distribute to the homeless at the Trenton Train Station, the Rescue Mission and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen as well as other locations.
Volunteers packed over 200 food bags and 240 hygiene bags, surpassing their original goal of 100 bags each. The hygiene kits included socks, deodorant, toothbrushes, floss, mouthwash and other items. Volunteers also made handmade cards with positive messages to put in each one of the food bags.ââ
