People are sometimes puzzled as to what the role of the board of education really is. In actuality, the role of the board of education is not to run the schools, but instead see that the schools are well run. The board operates through policy to be effective and efficient, and to avoid appearing to be arbitrary, capricious or unreasonable.
This does not sound very glamorous. In fact, board members do a lot of things that are boring but important. The board operates through three committees that thoroughly evaluate matters before they are voted on by the full board. Committee meetings can be tedious, particularly when the tasks involve evaluating draft policies and financial matters.
There is a lot more to being a member of the board of education than meets the eye. You need to be willing to do the mundane work necessary to properly do the job. This takes time and dedication and it isn’t glamorous.
As a former member of the board, I did this job well and I would like to do it again.
