Two Plainsboro-based artists will add a splash of color to Plainsboro Library with their works on fabric, on view through Wednesday, May 25. An opening reception for the exhibit takes place Sunday, May 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. Both artists give demonstrations of their painting techniques at 2:30 p.m. Sheela Raj’s acrylics on muslin and Sladjana Vasic’s dyes on silk offers a mix of wall hangings, framed art, home decor items, and scarves.
Raj, who is largely self-taught, draws inspiration from nature for her works, which are characterized by vibrant colors and contrasting shapes. While living in India she painted on various television programs and still returns to India to exhibit her work and lead workshops. In the U.S. she has studied at the New York School of Visual Arts and Princeton Art School.
Vasic has been intrigued by silk since she was a fashion design student at the High School for the Arts in Sarajevo. She worked as a children’s book illustrator in Serbia and has continued illustrating since moving to Plainsboro. In its generation Next exhibit, on view through Saturday, July 9, the West Windsor Arts Council puts a twist on its annual showcase of up-and-coming artists. In the exhibit, curated by WWAC executive director Aylin Green and exhibition committee member Kathleen Liao, an up-and-coming artist is paired with an established artist in mediums including photography, oil painting, mixed media, spray paint, etching, and others. An opening reception takes place Sunday, May 15, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Artist pairings are: Jon Naar and Alina Bliach, a West Windsor resident; Eve Ingalls and Goia von Staden; Zhiyuan Cong and Eileen Foti; Will “Kasso” Condry and Chelsea Perron; Frank Rivera and Kyle Stevenson; and Cynthia Groya and Aleta J. Wolfe. The artists will give an informal gallery talk about their work at the reception.
“The artists in this exhibition are at all different places in their development,” Green said in a statement. “We found that as a whole, who was established and who was up-and-coming was actually really relative.”
