The gallery at Plainsboro Public Library hosts the computer-generated works of artist, musician, and IT professional Mike Hunter during the month of April. Hunter will present a live performance of his music and imagery on Monday, April 9, at 7 p.m. following the library’s annual Mathemania program from 1 to 4 p.m.
Hunter presents fractal images as well as digital paintings and photo manipulations. The fractal images — kaleidoscopic computer-generated designs — are the exhibit’s focus. “My art is visionary as it purports to transcend the physical world and portray a wider vision of awareness including spiritual or mystical themes,” he says .
Hunter performs his completely improvised music under the name Ombient. He started his musical career playing his father’s electric bass through an old analog tape delay, making strange and disturbing space and mood music. He later continued on to study the classical guitar before moving into the progressive rock genre. Once he discovered the modern equivalent of that old analog tape delay, Ombient was born.
“My music, being of a live and improvisational nature, is representative of the feeling of the moment in which it is performed and of the subtle feedback between the audience and the performer,” says Hunter. It features guitar, processed and layered using digital looping equipment enabling a single guitar to produce symphonic levels of density. Hunter, a Trenton resident, is also the host of the radio show “Music with Space” on WPRB 103.3 FM in Princeton.
