The Plainsboro Police might soon be adding another dimension of crime fighting: an automatic license plate recognition system that would enable officers on patrol to quickly scan a plate number — even on a moving vehicle — and retrieve information about warrants or license violations related to the car’s owner. A resolution to formalize an agreement with Middlesex County is on the Township Committee agenda for Wednesday, April 11.
Homeland security grant money will help implement the program. At the committee meeting on Wednesday, March 28, Police Chief Guy Armour said the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, which opens on May 21, paved the way for the grant.
Armour also said that the only cost the township would incur will be training officers to use the device, and after an initial three-year agreement expires there could be a maintenance charge involved.
