Science Olympiad is the nation’s largest team science competition involving more than 4,”000 high schools and middle schools nationwide with events spanning a range of science and engineering topics. High School South placed first and High School North placed second in the high school division. High School South’s team advisors are teachers Meenakshi Bhattacharya, Brendan Field, and Karen Galley. The team will now be representing New Jersey at the national competition. The following are the 2009 medal winners:
First place awards were received for Astronomy by Ming-Ming Tran and Mark Benjamin; Disease Detectives by Ashwin Amurthur and Satyajeet Pal; Dynamic Planet by Satyajeet Pal and Piyush Poddar; Experimental Design by Piyush Poddar, Satyajeet Pal, and Peter Ku; and Remote Sensing by Aditya Girish and Manu Venkateswaren.
Second place awards were received for Cell Biology by Becky Shi and Ming-Ming Tran; Chemistry Lab by Ronak Gandhi and Naveen Galla; Fossils by Stephanie Ku and Perter Ku; Health Science by Becky Shi and Aditya Girish; Physics Lab by Mark Benjamin and Ane Qu; Picture This by Manu Venkateswaren, Mark Benjamin, and Piyush Poddar; and Protein Modeling by Ankita Gore and Nikita Singh.
Fifth place awards were received for Egg-O-Naut by Sarath Jaldai and Charles Zhou; Elevated Bridge by Manu Venkateswaren and Sarath Jaladi; and Forestry by Jenn Sharma and Sudershan Srinivasan.
Sixth place awards were received for Write It Do It by Stephanie Ku and Peter Ku.
The High School North team placed in 16 of the 23 regular events and one of the two trial events. The team advisors are faculty members Jim Looney, Rich Therkorn, and Holly Crochetiere, and parent Anand Gnanadesikan. The following are the 2009 medal winners:

Second place awards were received for Astronomy by David Goldfinger and Rohit Reddy; Dynamic Planet by Gita Gnanadesika and Renuka Reddy; Herpetology by Rohit Reddy and Spencer Palombit; and Technical Problem Solving by Shir Aharon and Yiqing Kong.
Third place awards were received for Chemistry Lab by Shir Aharon and Yiqing Kong; Disease Detectives by Lahari Vudayagiri and Felix Xiao; Environmental Chemistry by Mrinalini Basu and Louisa Ying; Experimental Design by Louisa Ying, Varnika Atmakuri, and Felix Xiao; Health Science by Lahari Vudayagiri and Spencer Palombit; and Remote Sensing by David Goldfinger and Rohit Reddy.
Fourth place awards were received for Forensics by Louisa Ying and Linda Maa; Physics Lab by Shir Aharon and Mrinalini Basu; and Cell Biology by Yiqing Kong and Renuka Reddy.
Sixth place awards were received for Forestry Quest by Sam Goldfinger and Henry Wang.
Additionally, students Prathima Radhakrishnan and Damini Saxena competed as alternates.
