West Windsor Community Farmers’ Market begins its sixth season on Saturday, May 16. A community-minded endeavor since its inception, the market aims to bring a sampling of locally produced farm-based fresh products. Aside from organically grown produce, the market’s offerings include specialty fruits and vegetables, meat, artisan breads, pastries, pies, fresh flowers, and much more. Typical of the market’s year-to-year growth, this year’s line-up is climbing again to include 11 farms and 11 non-farm vendors.##M:[more]##

In the market’s tradition, a wide range of cultural and other events will also be featured. In addition to the second annual GROWW (Greening of West Windsor) Environmental Festival on October 3, many events are expected to take place, including art and craft exhibits, children’s art programs, culinary demonstrations, entertainment programs, fitness and wellness awareness, and live music.

Participating vendors include Cherry Grove Farm with organic beef, pork, lamb, and cheeses; Chia-Xin Florist & Gardener with Asian produce, bedding, and hanging plants; ER & Son Organic Farm with organic produce; Griggstown Quail Farm with poultry, chicken pot pies, and fruit pies; Krowicki Farm with seasonal produce; North Slope Organic Farm with organic produce; Silver Forge Farm with eggs and produce; Stults Farm with seasonal New Jersey produce; Terhune Orchards with apples, cider, vegetables, and flowers. New this year are Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms with fresh mushrooms, and WoodsEdge Wool Farms with alpaca and llama wool products.

Non-farm vendors include Ducky Life Tea with organic teas; FunniBonz with barbecue sauce (The News, March 20, 2009); Grovers’ Mill Coffee with coffee and other drinks; De’ Lightbournes with pulled pork sandwiches; Naturally Nic’s with cookies; Olsson’s Fine Foods with hand-crafted ice cream and freshly squeezed lemonade; Pickle Licious with pickles and pickled products; Pure Indian Foods with organic ghee; Stony Brook Orchids with greenhouse orchid varieties; Twisted Tree Cafe with prepared vegan specialties; and Village Bakery with bread, muffins, and breakfast pastries.

West Windsor Arts Council also presents the third annual Gloria Nilson GMAC Real Estate Visual Arts Series held on Saturday mornings at the farmers market. The arts council has planned educational based workshops on 11 Saturday morning including two art exhibits, a culturally based event, and eight hands-on interactive events. Exhibits include showcases of the art talent of the West Windsor Plainsboro School children and winners of Mercer County showcase.

The hands-on programs explore an art medium, technique or artists where concepts of color, perception, and various art techniques are explored. This year the focus will be on Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollack, and Andy Warhol. For information visit www.westwindsorarts.org or call 609-919-1982.

“Our main focus is to try to provide an activity that people can sit down to do art,” says Eduardo Garcia, West Windsor Arts Council’s executive director. “We provide history on the artist as well as artists, college students, or interns with experience.” — Lynn Miller
