From Chopin to Copland

The Youth Orchestra of Central Jersey presents two concerts on Sunday, May 17, at High School North in Plainsboro highlighting the works of the world’s greatest composers. A $10 ticket includes both concerts. ($5 for children and seniors).##M:[more]##

The 3 p.m. concert features the String Preparatory Orchestra, Woodwind Choir, Wind Symphony, and Pro Arte Orchestra performing works of Mendelssohn, Britten, Dohnanyi, Bach, and Debussy.

The 7 p.m. concert features the Symphonic Orchestra, Brass Choir, Percussion Ensemble, and Saxophone Choir with works of Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Haydn, Bernstein, Copland, Piazzolla, and Dedrick.

The evening performance also features the winners of the concerto competition. Kristi Liao, pictured at right, an oboe player and West Windsor resident, plays a movement from the Oboe Concerto in C major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Liao, a student at the Lawrenceville School, has played the oboe for eight years. A former student with Barbara Witmer (Millstone River School), she currently studies with Matt Sullivan. A member of YOCJ for seven years, she was a music scholar at the New Jersey Governor’s School for the Arts last summer. She will attend Princeton University in the fall, where she plans to continue her strong involvement in music.

Musicians from West Windsor and Plainsboro include Anant Gharpure on bass; Ayza Akhtar, William Bak, Peter Chi, Anna Chicco, Tiffany Ge, Kevin Gu, Eric Hsu, and Brian Hui on cello; and Avilash Bagchi, Mrinalini Basu, Shalini Basu, Hannah Cai, Stephanie Ding, and Molly Fisch-Friedman on viola. Also, Sophia Chan, Victoria Chan, and Joyce Chang on violin 1; and Lauren Bragat, Brian Chan, Radhika Dalal, Alan Gan, Eric Gan, and Shwetha Hariharan on violin 2.

Also Tessa Berger and Richard Hua on alto saxophone; Andrew Benerofe and Mark Brown-Mcmillin on baritone; and Moya Chin and Stefanie Grossmann on clarinet. Also Christina Chen, Joyce Chu, Anny Fan, and James Harshaw on flute; Laura Carandang and Emma Fleming on oboe; Sachin Bhide and Varun Hegde on trombone; Morven Chin, Ariel Gelfand, and William Goldin on trumpet; and Nikhil Dondapati on percussion.

The program runs under the guidance of John Enz, artistic director; and conductors Phillip Pugh and Brian Woodward.
