Rock Brook School in Skillman is hosting Laugh Out Loud, an evening of comedy, to benefit the school on Saturday, October 17, at Springdale Golf Club in Princeton. Gary Gulman, who has performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Show with David Letterman, Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Jimmy Kimmel Live, will be the featured comedian.
“We know that he will bring smiles and laughter to this community, while at the same time providing the much needed financial assistance to the growing programs that support the children at Rock Brook,” says Lana Sarchiapone, a Plainsboro resident and committee member. “It is a private school and with cutbacks in the state we received less government aid.”
Since its founding in 1974, Rock Brook School has been educating children, ages 5 to 14, with multiple handicaps. The mission is to help students gain the skills, confidence, and ability to perform well when they leave the structured and supportive atmosphere of the school.
Working in finance and risk management with Turner Construction in New York and New Jersey, Sarchiapone has worked on projects including the new Yankee Stadium. Her husband, Rob, is a project manager also with Turner Construction. Currently working on the new University Medical Center at Plainsboro, he has worked on Princeton Public Library, Princeton University’s football stadium, Butler College, and new chemistry building.
The couple met on the train from Edison to New York City. They moved to Plainsboro in 1991 to get away from the congestion and to be near good friends. They also knew that it was a good school system and a good investment.
Their son, Peter, 11, is in his sixth year at Rock Brook School. He attended Mercer County’s Joseph Cappella School in his pre-school years. When he was five he was a student at Hawk School but it did not work out and he was placed out of district. Peter has a “smattering of symptoms” in the autistic spectrum. Their daughter, Natalie, 14, is a freshman at High School North.
Gulman, based in Boston, has been also been seen on “Last Comic Standing,” a Showtime special, an HBO comedy documentary, and a Comedy Central special. His CD, “Conversations With Inanimate Objects,” is available on his website, www.garygulman.com.
