Two slates of three candidates each will be facing off in the race for West Windsor Council in the Tuesday, Nov. 5 election.
Incumbent council president Alison Miller and running mates Yan Mei Wang and Shin-Yi Lin will be running under the slate name, “Progressive Vision for West Windsor” for three open seats.
Running against them is a slate of candidates that announced in mid-June—Andrea Sue Mandel, Sonia Gawas and Michael Stevens.
Miller is the only incumbent running this year. Council members Ayesha Hamilton and Yingchao “YZ” Zhang, whose terms end on Dec. 31, both opted not to run for reelection.
Miller had previously announced her candidacy in June, state that an official announcement regarding her running mates would come at a later date.
Miller, who is a certified planner, says she will continue to work to preserve open space, advocate for new sidewalks, bikeways and safe intersections and provide funding for critical senior services.
“As councilwoman, she has presented ordinances limiting the amount of residential growth in single-family zones and has made sure that new apartments mix their affordable and market-rate units so that no resident is stigmatized,” states a news release announcing the slate.
Wang has run unsuccesful campaigns for mayor and council over the past two years. She has become increasingly involved in township activities.
She said that she has had frequent conversation with people in town, which has made her aware of issues of concern to residents.
“Yan Mei is focused on stabilizing our taxes by improving infrastructure, preserving open space, and introducing local green energy solutions,” says the release. “This year, Yan Mei has advocated for smart road repair techniques that improve our roads while saving an average of hundreds of dollars per year on taxes and vehicle repair costs for each family.”
She is also involved in the “West Windsor Plastics for West Windsor Parks” project—an effort to collect platics and recycle them into park benches.
Lin is a proponent of making government more transparent, and making it easier for residents to connect with the township.
“She believes community building and inclusion should be the top priority for township leadership, because responsible, consensus-based governance requires that our leaders remain in close conversation with all members of our township,” the release says. “A scientist and educator, Shin-Yi promises data-based decision making that will set West Windsor on a path of long-term success.”
