Princeton Medical Institute (PMI) and Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation (GAP) have been working together with the goal to treat Alzheimer’s Disease. Through GAP, PMI is now offering free transportation through Lyft for patients interested in participating in Alzheimer’s studies.

Through Lyft, a transportation company, PMI can now ensure that all patients have transportation to their appointment and home.

Approximately 5 million adults in the United States suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease, and the incidence of this progressive neurologic illness is expected to triple by 2050. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. However, there are approved medications to treat some of the symptoms.

Although each person affected by Alzheimer’s experiences it differently, there are usually common symptoms that make it identifiable. Typically, early symptoms tend to be thought of as age-related conditions, leading to late diagnosis. The most notable early symptom is memory loss. As the disease advances, patients may begin to suffer from confusion, irritability and aggression, mood swings, language breakdown, long-term memory loss and general social withdrawal.

This disease makes it increasingly difficult to complete daily activities such as driving a car, getting dressed and navigating to locations. The Lyft services provides patients the convenience of a worry-free trip to and from PMI without having to drive, or to find their own ride.

Clinical researchers are now exploring the earliest phase of the illness, called mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer’s disease. During this stage, patients have memory loss along with spinal fluid abnormalities and Amyloid PET scans confirming early Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition, volunteers may receive study-related medical care; study medication, laboratory testing and cognitive testing. Medical insurance is not necessary to participate in these studies, and reimbursement and stipend may also be provided.

Princeton Medical Institute is a nationally known research center in New Jersey that offers several clinical trials specializing in central nervous system disorders.

Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation is dedicated to joining together leading academic researchers, pharmaceutical companies, nonprofit organizations and foundations, and governments around the world to reduce the time, cost and risk of Alzheimer’s clinical trials to speed innovative medicines to those with or at risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Princeton Medical is the only New Jersey center to be part of GAP foundation.

Caregivers and patients interested in participation in any of PMI’s studies are welcome to learn more at PMI’s website. If you or a loved one are concerned about memory, you may be able to benefit from a free initial memory screening and consultation at Princeton Medical Institute.
