To County, Township & Board Of Education:
We, the residents, of West Windsor and Plainsboro township would like to take this opportunity and express our profound concern over rising property taxes in the last few years, and the prospect of a tax increase in 2010.
The township and the school board surely understand that the economic situation since 2007-08 has profoundly changed in this country in a negative way and continues to be precarious. Residents who pay property taxes, and are the primary funding source for both township operations and the school district have undergone pay cuts (in many cases between 10-20%), health benefit cuts, and in many cases lost their jobs during this time.
We live in a ‘new normal’ that affects our daily lives.
At the same time, township and school district workers have proceeded to benefit from contracts that were negotiated prior to this crisis. Witness, the school and municipal tax levies for 2010 as proposed by the school board and the township, both of which are expected to increase again by more than 6% and 5% respectively.
We as residents of these townships cannot afford increases in taxes for 2010 whether at the municipal or school district level. For reasons outlined above and many more that will take up additional print space, respectfully, we ask leaders at the township/school board/county/state level to not propose an increase in the township or school district budgets for 2010.
We ask that property taxes be frozen for 2010 at the same level as 2009 for both West Windsor and Plainsboro (i.e. a zero cent property tax increase). We empower and encourage our leaders to take all steps necessary in achieving this goal for 2010.
