Bart Jackson’s article on the demise of Plainsboro’s SuperFresh in the November 30 issue of the News provoked mixed responses online.
Remarked one reader, “SuperFresh’s prices are ridiculous and selection is poor . . . I travel out of my way to Shop Rite. It would be great for Shop Rite to take over the location, but I sure won’t miss Superprice.”
Many, though, were unhappy to hear of its January 11 closing. “Very sad to hear this,” wrote one commenter. “Hopefully the other stores in the Plainsboro Plaza won’t suffer.”
Wrote another: “It is a great loss to the community. The Asian market does not fill the needs that a standard supermarket does. The pharmacy will not be missed; CVS is across the parking lot and is taking over the customers. The real loss is the grocery store . . . I suggest the mayor and town council work together with the owner of the shopping center to get these shops filled. It is bad for property values and there is a serious need here!”
Others offered suggestions for the future of Plainsboro Plaza:
“How about inviting one of the more rural stores into the area? It’s a good location with locked in customers and just a question of keeping things efficient. If their corporate group doesn’t see profit potential perhaps a more agile firm will,” said one.
“The current owners of that shopping center are doing a piss poor job attracting new businesses to the plaza,” wrote another. “The old Peebles store has been empty now for over three years and the old Ace Hardware store has been empty for two, not to mention the smaller spaces.
“Mayor Cantu needs to step up and put the squeeze on this company to sell the plaza, because it’s obvious that the current owners don’t care about Plainsboro.”
