Eight students at the Viva Ballroom Dance Studio in Lawrence took top honors in April when they competed at the 2013 National DanceSport Championships.
From April 5-7, the students, all between the ages of 12 and 15, competed with the best dancers from around the nation at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live hotel.
Mateusz Wyszynski, 14, of Hamilton and his partner Ewelina Truchel, 15, of Lawrence, took first place in the Youth Silver Latin group and in the Youth Gold Latin group with their Latin routine.
“The other couples were very competitive,” Wyszynski said. “It was a great new experience.”
The other students placed in both Latin and Standard ballroom groups.
Elina Rozentsvayg, 13, of Princeton, and Michal Wyszynski, 12, of Hamilton, placed in four different areas. The couple danced both Standard ballroom and Latin routines, taking first in both Junior Two Silver Standard and Junior Two Silver Latin.
Rozentsvayg and Wyszynski also placed second in Junior Two Gold Standard and third in Junior Two Gold Latin.
The other couples to place in the top of the competition include Hamilton residents Samanta Bryk, 12, and Mateusz Kropiewnicki, 13; and Alexa Gamburg, 12, of East Windsor, and Nicolai Styrkas, 12, of Princeton. Bryk and Kropiewnicki took second in Junior One Silver Standard, third in Junior Two Silver Standard and third in Junior Two Silver Latin. Gamburg and Styrkas placed first in Junior One Bronze Standard, first in Junior Two Bronze Standard and fifth in Junior Two Bronze Latin.
All of the students have been dancing for at least three years, many with experience in areas outside of ballroom and Latin dancing.
“I danced before this in lyrical and jazz, and I wanted to try something new,” Bryk said.
She has been dancing for eight years and started going to Viva Ballroom Dance Studio within the last few years.
Owners Wioletta Wyszynski and Jarek Radzimierski met through a mutual friend and found they both had a passion for dance. They started Viva in 2008. After beginning in Trenton, the two moved the studio to Lawrence for a larger and safer space.
In the 2012 national competition, Viva had three couples travel to Maryland and place with top honors. Radzimierski and Wyszynski have traveled to nationals with the students each of the five years the studio has been open, and said they see the studio growing.
“It’s not New York City, but we compete with [that level] and are beating them sometimes,” he said.
Boriana Deltcheva coached the eight students who competed and placed in this year’s nationals. She works with many of the students at Viva, whose ages range from three to adult in a wide array of dances, including ballroom and Latin. Deltcheva is also a World Cup Professional Latin Dance Champion and has competed around the world.
The owners have expanded their class schedule to include not only ballroom and Latin, but also ballet, hip-hop, tap, jazz and even zumba classes. Radzimierski said Viva is the only studio that specializes in ballroom and Latin classes for children.
“A lot of the other studios around are for adults only,” he said. “But we have gained a pretty big crown of dancers here, especially because we have world champions in the school. This is all a big accomplishment.”
The students hope to compete in the United States National Amateur DanceSport Championships in Utah in March 2014. And, Radzimierski said, the ultimate goal is to attend the Junior Blackpool Dance Festival in England.
