Topping many New Year’s Resolution lists will be the following words: Get my body in shape.
Alexander Obe knows this, and opened RevX Studios in Robbinsville last Jan. 4, wanting to give gym-goers a place that was authentic, with instructors who Obe said “walk the walk, not just talk the talk.”
A fitness studio, RevX, located at 2346 Route 33, combines two ways to workout: spinning indoor group cycling and TRX strength and conditioning. TRX uses an individual’s core body strength and weight, as opposed to weight lifting. Clients use medicine balls, and they also do abdominal workouts and planks.
Also different is the way clients commit to workouts. Everything is done online at revxstudios.com, where people register for a scheduled workout session. Some customers take a chance and show up at the gym without registering for a workout, but they may be turned away if the class is full.
There is a maximum of 20 people per session. The small session size and the pre-registration each give gym-goers incentive to show up to their workout.
Obe wants clients who come to this clean, urban-feeling facility—complete with brick walls, exposed duct work and great music—to feel relaxed. He bets those who are relaxed won’t have any problems keeping their resolutions; he said they’ll want to come to exercise on a regular basis. The facility runs on its own air conditioning unit and humidifier, keeping the air crisp and fresh during the workouts.
Obe, a former high school wrestling and track competitor who holds a bachelor’s in psychology from Bucknell University, wanted something different than the typical gym experience.
“We want people to come here and not have to worry about how they look or feel like it is a meet-market,” Obe said. “We don’t have mirrors on the wall for a reason. We want people to focus on the workout, not how they look in the mirror. This gives people a more relaxed, comfortable feeling, as opposed to being intimidated.”
After working as an IT consultant for four years, Obe said “it just never felt right,” and that he wanted to do something he was passionate about.
“I wanted to work in fitness because I have been an athlete my entire life, and I live the lifestyle that I want to help our clients to live,” said Obe.
He started out working for a New York Sports Club in Freehold, and then in Princeton. Wanting to be his own boss, Obe bought P.T.S. Health and Fitness in Skillman eight years ago.
Obe has taken his experience from the facilities he has managed and owned, and has created an environment in his Robbinsville studio he said has benefited many of his clients, which are mostly professionals.
“The morning crowd comes in here by 5:30, Monday through Friday, before their workday,” Obe said. “We have beautiful, clean locker rooms and shower facilities so that people can leave right from here and go to work. We are hoping to get more stay-at-home moms down the road.”
The staff at RevX Studios consists of athletes who have always worked hard to stay healthy and in shape. Obe wants clients to feel inspired by the energy in the room, and he wants them to have fun.
“Our 11 instructors live the lifestyle,” Obe said. “Being fit themselves, our staff practices what they preach. It is a total team effort.”
Front desk associates Jennifer Penrose, of Hamilton, Margaret Vardakis, of Robbinsville, and Alicea Angelo, of South Brunswick, all agreed. They each praised Obe’s concept for the studio, and said it makes customers feel like family. That, in turn, empowers them and leads them to better results from their workouts.
Which is just what that New Year’s Resolution is all about, right?
