Radiology Affiliates Imaging of Lawrenceville announced that it is introducing 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, a new breast screening technology.
In many women, particularly those with dense breasts, normal tissue can hide breast cancer until it is much more advanced and standard 2D imaging may not wholly capture abnormalities. The 3D imaging, approved by the FDA in 2011, is better able to accurately reveal hidden breast cancers.
In a 3D mammogram, an X-ray arm sweeps in an arc over the breast, taking multiple images from every angle and piecing them together to produce a three-dimensional photograph of the breast. That photograph separates the image into multiple layers, allowing radiologists to examine one layer at a time.
The 3D mammograms are available exclusively at the Lawrenceville location at 3120 Princeton Pike, Lawrenceville.
