When Gail Williams’ clients tell her they feel better and have received compliments from those who notice improvements to their physiques, Williams knows she’s doing her job.
Williams, a personal trainer and fitness instructor, launched her business, Simply Fitness, in 2005. Her workout studio, located in her Trenton home, is complete with workout machines and an exercise area.
Most of her sessions are monthly, one-on-one workouts based on the individual’s fitness level and goals. Williams also hosts partner sessions, and can accommodate up to three clients at a time in her studio.
Williams said having her workout studio in her own home affords her a certain flexibility she wouldn’t have at a gym, such as scheduling sessions early in the morning or later in the evening. But the sessions themselves are no different than what one would find with a trainer at a gym.
Williams said her location doesn’t affect how she trains her clients.
“I could be outside in the park, and I could be able to train somebody regardless of whatever their fitness level, as any good trainer should be able to do,” she said.
Williams is certified as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor through the American Council on Exercise and the National Academy of Sports Medicine, respectively, and is certified as a nutrition specialist through the American Academy of Sports Dietitians and Nutritionists. She earned her master’s degree in exercise science and health promotion from California University of Pennsylvania.
Williams said her own enjoyment at Simply Fitness comes from her clients’ success stories. Her clients each have different limitations and expectations, but Williams said it’s gratifying to hear them say they have increased mobility, feel better and have had others notice their physical progress.
One of Williams’ clients had previously been a fitness instructor, but was looking for someone else to push her further to get better physical results.
“She knew how to work out, but she wanted somebody with more education and experience to be able to push her, so she could see those levels she thought she wasn’t able to reach,” Williams said.
Nearly four years later, Williams said she’s still finding new ways to challenge her client, who has developed and strengthened her muscle tone.
Williams currently teaches pilates, step, boot camp, toning and Zumba classes. The classes are held at several different facilities and are available to participants of any fitness level.
On June 21, Williams launched a free demo event at the Ewing Community Center, the new location for her group exercise classes. She also teaches classes for corporate businesses in addition to her own classes.
Williams’ goal at Simply Fitness is to make sure that her clients, primarily women from ages 30–60, change their exercise and eating habits in healthy ways. Williams recently began offering a new service, holistic health counseling, which she said allows her to analyze an individual’s eating habits based on other outside factors in the client’s life.
“My differentiation is I educate with a combination of a lot of different variables, between exercise, nutrition and now bringing in holistic wellness, so there is an understanding of what one needs to stay healthy,” Williams said.
