Lawrence Township’s Growth and Redevelopment Committee, in conjunction with the MidJersey Chamber of Commerce, conducted the 15th Annual Awards Program for Economic Development Oct. 9.

Each year, awards are presented to businesses, individuals and civic groups that have enhanced the community in a special way, such as job growth, expanding the tax base, building or renovating a structure or by participating in local activities that benefit the town and its residents.

The program took place at Special Olympics New Jersey. Thomas J. Varga, senior vice president of sponsorships for the 2012 Special Olympics USA National Games, gave the keynote address.

Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville and Slackwood fire companies won the Mayor’s Award for Economic or Community Development. The fire companies were recognized for their efforts on behalf of the community.

The New Large Business Award went to The Cheesecake Factory in Quaker Bridge Mall.

The New Small Business Award went to JC Strings located at 4120 Quakerbridge Road. This category recognizes entrepreneurs that occupy the smaller spaces among the township’s office and retail properties.

President of Great Looks Multicultural Hair Salon, Denise Taylor, won the Business Service Award, which is presented to a business that has made a significant contribution to the township’s business or civic community. Her salon is located in Mercer Mall.

A New Building/Renovation Award went to Mercer Council on Alcoholism & Drug Addiction, 1931 Brunswick Ave. This award recognizes a significant new building or renovation project that enhances its surrounding neighborhood.

Laura Nawrocik and Ashley Morris are recipients of the Podmore/Dwyer Historic Award. The women co-authored Lawrence Township Revisited.

The Ralph Copleman Environmental Award went to Ben Franklin Elementary School. The award recognizes the school for its environmentally sustainability.
