When Paul N. Daly, Esq. and Debra M. Toth moved Daly Law to the Ewing Corporate Offices at 20 Scotch Road in April, they were up and running in two weeks.
“We were very lucky,” said Daly. “There was an attorney/owner of the building who retired. The place was perfect for us — the stars aligned. We made our changes and put our touches on it.”
Daly and Toth have been a team for 23 years, starting at Stark and Stark and continuing with Daly Law. “We’ve worked together day in and day out. We’ve gotten pretty good at it. We get cases from other attorneys who can’t do them,” Daly said.
Daly Law specializes in Personal Injury cases in the Central Jersey area, mostly in Mercer County.
According to their website, they work “exclusively to help clients who sustained serious or catastrophic personal injury as a result of auto, trucking, motorcycle, slip and fall, and other accidents.” A more comprehensive list is located online.
“That list was to show the breadth of cases we can handle,” said Daly. “We’ve sued lots of big corporations. We’ve handled every variety of personal injury, wrongful death and catastrophic injury. Each person is different. We meet with experts and learn about it to properly litigate it. You never know what is coming in the door. You get to meet some fascinating people who are experts who also educate me.”
“We have big firm experience with local roots,” said Toth, who was born and raised in Lawrence Township.
Daly is from West Trenton, and now lives in Titusville. The move to the new office shrank his commute in half from 12 minutes to six. “Our families are here,” Daly said. “My cousins in Ewing worked for GM. I went to St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, then Widener Law School. I passed the bar in 1988.”
With successful results as high as a $17 million settlement in 1999 for a burn victim in a Burlington factory where a hydrogen furnace the client was operating exploded, and other claims against large corporations, retail businesses, amusement parks, and boating accidents, Daly has a proven track record as a trial lawyer.
Toth, the senior personal injury paralegal at Daly Law, has been a certified paralegal since 1980. “My first job was in a law firm in 1978 — a single practitioner on Olden Avenue. I feel I’ve come full circle,” Toth said, adding that she was able to work for that lawyer while still attending high school. She continued her education at Mercer County Community College.
When asked about being on their own, Daly enthuses “It was time for a change. We’ve been exceedingly happy.”
After 33 years as a lawyer, Daly encounters “a lot of associates who I have trained in what I do. The oddest thing is when the younger attorneys become judges and I have to abide by their decisions. The guys who mentored me became judges and are now retired or semi-retired. They are still a resource to me. I like to be a resource to the younger generation.”
Daly and T oth both speak very highly of each other. They have a solid working relationship built upon mutual respect and admiration. They also care about their clients. At the conclusion of a case, Daly tells his clients “I hope to never see you again in this office — don’t get hurt again.”
That’s not to say, he wouldn’t mind seeing them around town. “Average litigation takes two to four years. We care and love and can help them. It is a tremendous feeling to turn their life around. It is rewarding.”
“We see way too much in our line of work,” concludes Toth.
