The variety of beauty products found in Four Sisters Beauty Supply is designed to meet the needs of all the diverse residents of Lawrence.
For Nya, Nadeen, Mameisia and Amie Kabiai, the four sisters behind the business, Four Sisters Beauty Supply represents what was missing from the community: a beauty supply store with products for everyone.
Four Sisters Beauty Supply provides a local outlet for people of every ethnicity to find the right beauty products that are specific to their skin type, hair type and personal style.
All have backgrounds in various fields: Nya in nursing, Nadeen in engineering, Amie a peace corpse recruiter and Mameisia in human services, but the sisters said they still understand how hard it can be to find the right beauty products at a reasonable price. Four Sisters Beauty Supply aims to provide the community with all the necessary tools to carry out any self maintenance beauty regime while staying within a budget.
In the store, customers can find an array of hair products, extensions and wigs, skin care products and accessories. Four Sisters Beauty Supply carries brands like Nexxus, Mizani, BioSilk, Chi, Bed Head and more. Nya said they stay up to date with the ever-changing beauty care trends, and are filling the popular demand for organic products. She said Lawrence residents have been seeking brands made with natural ingredients including names like Jane Carter, olive oil products and Carol’s Daughter, featured on the Oprah Winfrey show. Four Sisters Beauty Supply carries skin care products like Nivia, Jergens and Palmers, while accessories like scarves, sunglasses and jewelry are also on display throughout the store.
Nya said Four Sisters Beauty Supply values personal relationships with its customers. The Kabiai sisters strive to create an open line of communication between themselves and the residents of Lawrence. By establishing more intimate relationships throughout the community, the sisters said they can better serve their customer’s needs.
“We want the community to know we are here for them,” Nya said. “If there is a product that we don’t carry but customers want to see in our store, we will get it for them.”
In addition to placing special orders, Four Sisters Beauty Supply offers discounts to students and licensed beauticians with valid identification.
Nya, Nadeen, Mameisia and Amie grew up in Lawrenceville. None of the local beauty supply stores carried the right products for them, so the four Sierra Leonean-American sisters traveled outside of Lawrence in search of beauty products.
When the storefront on Lawrenceville Road became available two years ago, Nya, Nadeen, Amie and Mameisia saw an opportunity to bring something new to Lawrence. Supported by friends and family, the Kabiai sisters opened Four Sisters Beauty Supply.
Mameisia said future plans for Four Sisters Beauty Supply involve advocating for women with diseases that affect hair growth. She said Four Sisters Beauty supply recently began reaching out to breast cancer and other hair disorder organizations who supply women with wigs.
“We plan on connecting with these organizations to provide them with donated or discounted wigs right from the store,” Mameisia said.
The Kabiai sisters said they enjoy being a part of the community. They said they take pride in establishing their name in Lawrence and providing a local outlet for everyone’s beauty needs.
