The City of Trenton has been recognized as a 2025 “Healthy Town to Watch” by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute.
The designation highlights local efforts to improve public health and access to care. The recognition was announced last month by the by the Institute through its Mayors Wellness Campaign — a statewide initiative conducted in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.
A total of 45 municipalities were named “Healthy Towns” this year, while 12 communities, including Trenton, received the “Healthy Town to Watch” designation. Four additional towns were recognized as “Healthy Town Up-and-Coming.”
The program highlights municipalities working to improve health outcomes by addressing factors such as access to physical activity, nutritious food, safe environments and mental health support.
Mayor Reed Gusciora said the recognition reflects the city’s commitment to improving health outcomes, expanding access to care and advancing health equity. He described the designation as an affirmation of ongoing work across the city.
The city said in a news release that the recognition reflects collaboration among healthcare providers, community partners and residents, along with efforts led by the city’s Department of Health and Human Services.
Initiatives cited by the city include expanded lead poisoning prevention programs, free preventive health services and increased access to mental health resources.
Outreach efforts have focused on education, testing, treatment and follow-up care, while also strengthening partnerships with community organizations to expand services.
Dr. Diego Minacapelli, director of the Department of Health and Human Services, credited the Health Promotions Unit and its leadership team for advancing those efforts. He pointed to their role in expanding education, testing, treatment and outreach to better serve residents.
The work also includes developing accessible platforms to promote healthy living and providing families with information to make informed health decisions.
“While the City celebrates this milestone with pride and gratitude, it remains focused on the work ahead,”: stated the release. “The City of Trenton continues to lead with purpose, collaboration, and bold action to build a stronger and healthier future for all residents.”
