A Trenton man is facing murder charges after authorities say he shot and killed his girlfriend and wounded another woman early Sunday morning before fleeing the scene in a stolen car.
Lamont Truitt, 36, was arrested Nov. 16 after turning himself in to the Trenton Police Department, according to a joint statement from Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta Marbrey and Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson.
Truitt is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, first-degree carjacking, two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree certain persons not to possess a firearm. Prosecutors have filed a motion to detain him pending trial.
The incident began just before 6 a.m. on Nov. 16, when a ShotSpotter alert reported multiple gunshots in the area of Oakland Street. Trenton police received 911 calls shortly afterward about a woman who had been shot in the leg.
Responding officers found a 25-year-old woman with a gunshot wound on the 200 block of Coolidge Avenue. She was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment.
As police were assisting the first victim, they received another report of a woman being shot multiple times by a man who fled in a silver four-door car.
Trenton police and the Mercer County Homicide Task Force began an investigation led by Detective Luis Vega. Authorities determined that Truitt approached a silver Toyota Camry parked on Coolidge Avenue, where his girlfriend, 32-year-old Alyssia Murphy, was sitting with a friend. Truitt allegedly began arguing with Murphy, pulled a handgun, and opened fire.
Police say the 25-year-old woman was able to escape the car before Truitt drove off in the Camry.
Roughly two hours later, officers from the Lower Makefield Township Police Department in Pennsylvania found Murphy dead inside the silver Camry near East Ferry Road and the Delaware Canal.
Prosecutor Marbrey thanked Lower Makefield police and the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
