The Westminster Conservatory at Nassau will resume its lunchtime concert series on Thursday, Jan. 15 with a solo recital by composer and pianist Eric Houghton.
The free public performance begins at 12:15 p.m. in Niles Chapel at Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton.
Houghton, a longtime faculty member at Westminster Conservatory of Music, will perform a program that features selections from his original collection More Scenes from Childhood, three preludes by Rachmaninoff, and Chopin’s Polonaise in A-flat.
A graduate of Westminster Choir College and the Manhattan School of Music, Houghton has taught at Westminster Conservatory since 1985. He holds two advanced degrees in piano performance and has given more than 30 solo and chamber recitals throughout the Eastern United States, presenting both classical repertoire and his own original compositions.
Among his most significant works is Pioneer Songs, a massive 15-song oratorio for soloist quartet, choir, and narrator that chronicles the first successful wagon trains to California in the 1840s.
The piano version premiered in 1993 and was performed in St. Louis, Chicago, and New Jersey. That debut led to Houghton’s election to ASCAP and his receipt of the “Meet the Composer” award. The work has since been orchestrated, and future full symphonic performances are planned.
Houghton has composed over 100 pieces, including Victory Songs honoring World War II veterans and Songs From the Cross depicting the last days of Jesus Christ.
His art songs include settings of texts by Victor Hugo, William Shakespeare, and biblical psalms, as well as numerous solo piano works and widely performed church anthems. His 2012 composition A Musical Program of Recovery celebrates life after addiction.
His most recent work, Five Songs of Life and Death — set to poems by Victor Hugo — debuted in St. Louis last month, performed by the University of Missouri–St. Louis orchestra with Metropolitan Opera soprano Mary Dunleavy.

The next recital in the Nassau concert series is scheduled for Feb. 19 and will feature the Volanti Flute Quartet.
